Adi’s Story
On the morning of December 17, 2020, life as she knew it was changed forever for Adivie “Diane” Sheji. My sister Adi, who has been living in Amsterdam, had been experiencing severe neurological symptoms for weeks. After a negative Covid test and a misdiagnosis of the flu by her doctors, Adivie collapsed, completely unresponsive.
As fate would have it, Adivie was discovered by her boyfriend immediately upon collapse, and rushed to the largest Trauma Center in the Netherlands, University Medical Center, Amsterdam.
There it was discovered that Adivie, at age 46, had suffered a massive ruptured brain aneurysm. Ruptured brain aneurysms are fatal in about 50% of all cases. Of those who survive, 66% suffer some permanent neurological deficit. Approximately 15% of people with a ruptured aneurysm die before even reaching the hospital.
Adivie was rushed into emergency surgery to repair the artery that ruptured in her brain. A temporary shunt was implanted to help drain the blood and fluid out of the affected brain tissue. Without the shunt, the pressure from the fluids would have permanently destroyed her brain tissue.
Despite the surgery, the Neurosurgeons reported her condition as grim, with a high fatality rate. After a week being in a medically induced coma, she began to show inconsistent signs of arousability. Adivie was still in an altered mental state, unaware of her surroundings, for several weeks. The decision to implant the shunt permanently was made by the doctors, and another surgical procedure was performed.
Adivie has managed to fight for her life, and survive this tragedy. However, the trauma is so significant she is required to be in an in-patient brain injury rehabilitation center. Here she will need to re-learn the basics; speaking, walking, mental cognition to regain memories, and even feeding herself.
We will be forever grateful that we did not lose Adivie, but it will be a long haul until recovery. Adivie requires extensive, intense in-patient rehabilitation and therapies that could help her regain all that was lost from her brain injury.
Adivie is left without a job, medical expenses and the possibility of losing her home as well. I am asking that anyone with a heart, to help during this crisis of overwhelming expenses for her care. Adivie will be required to move to another rehab facility in a few months as well, as the possibility of her recovery happening within the next few months is non-existent.
Adivie’s kind, caring, loving heart, and inner strength to rise from the ashes has always been a beacon of light that has helped lift others. We are hoping to help her will to survive by easing the burdens and concerns of her expenses, by the help of your donations.
Any amount you may be able to donate, would be greatly appreciated by all of us.
